The book opens with Cole and his buddy Dalton at school. It's Halloween and Cole is going to ask Jenna, the girl he likes, to go with him to a haunted house that has been put up in their neighborhood. After making their way to the haunted house and reaching the end of the installments within the building, Cole, Dalton, and the other kids that tagged along are taken down to the basement where they are tricked and enslaved and taken to the mystical between-realm known as the Outskirts. When they arrive Cole is informed that the Outskirts is made up of 5 kingdoms: Sambria, Elloweer, Zeropolis, Necronum, and Creon. Cole must search through each of the five to find his missing friends, save the outskirts and find a way home.

Honestly, I really enjoyed this book the way Brandon Mull structures and paces the story is incredibly engaging, plus I'm a sucker for fantasy novels anyway so. I think the way he describes the fights is captivating aswell, though he could describe the surroundings a bit better, to be honest. Also, I feel like Cole doesn't get enough action during the fights> I know it's not an anime and that's not really the point of the series, but he could certainly be doing more, after all, he manages to kill a cyclops by himself in this book, yet he hasn't done anything really of note until about 4o percent through the 3rd book. This book had me laughing out loud at many parts aswell. very funny, I will continue to read into the series further.
